There are a number of reasons to take out the tonsils. Tonsillectomy is usually indicated if you have recurrent infections of the tonsils, like more than 5-7 episodes a year or experience complications of enlarged tonsils like breathing problems or rare disease of the tonsils. Your tonsils are important. They produce white blood cells and act as a first line of defense against infections of the mouth; but if you’re having problems they may need to come out. Talk to your doctor or an ear, nose and throat specialist about whether or not you’re a candidate to have them removed. Recovery will take about a week.
