The rules can vary from state to state, but in general donors must be at least 17 years old, 16 years old with appropriate written permission from a parent or legal guardian; and you must weigh at least 110 lbs and be in good health. Donating blood does not make you slimmer. Most people feel great after donating blood and can do normal activities. Make sure to drink extra fluids for about two days, and also try not to strain yourself, like lift anything heavy, for at least four or five hours after giving blood.
