Safe medicine during cold & flu season

By: Dr. Steve Salvatore, Co-Owner of The Academy

Now that kids are back in school, the passing of germs has begun. Many parents are concerned about cold and flu season. With Infant and Children’s Tylenol still off the market due to a massive recall, the American Academy of Pediatrics is suggesting that generic brands of acetaminophen and ibuprofen are safe and cheaper to use.

Parents should avoid giving any over the counter cough syrups or cold medicines to children under 6 because of potential side effects. And never give children aspirin as it can lead to Reyes Syndrome. The makers of Tylenol say they do not expect their products to return to the shelves until Spring 2011.
