If you want to get healthier, start paying in cash. A new study from the Journal of Consumer Research suggests that paying with cash instead of plastic can help you make healthier food choices and save money at the same time. Researchers followed over a thousand families for 6 months and tracked what they bought. People who used debit cards made more impulsive food choices, many of them so-called “vice products” like cookies, cakes and other fat-filled foods. Psychologically, the families reported that swiping their debit cards took away from the joy of spending. Grocery stores rely on the impulsive spending habits of their consumers. So the best advice…if you want to get fit, leave your debit card at home.
