We all know airbags can help protect you during a car accident, but did you know they also protect the kidneys? A new study of nearly three thousand car accident records found that front impact airbags reduce the risk of kidney injury by 45%; and side impact airbags cut the risk by 52%. Researchers were surprised to find how effective airbags are at sparing the kidneys since they’re primary designed to protect the head and spine. They’re now looking to see if they protect other organs as well. Car accidents are the most common cause of blunt force trauma to the kidneys accounting for about half to 2/3 of all injuries.
