New guidelines have been announced for athletes who have suffered a concussion. The American Academy of Neurology states that atheletes should not be allowed back in the game until all symptoms have passed.
This is a complete turn around from earlier guidelines which graded concussions based on symptoms such as headache, nausea, loss of consciousness or short term memory. Those with mild concussions were allowed back on the field just after a week. This new guideline suggests that the brain can be impacted even after a small amount of trauma; and multiple small injuries can add up leading to early memory loss and dementia.
